AMG supported planning, systems integration, and interagency coordination for California’s most advanced operational corridor. The I-80 ICM project deployed adaptive ramp metering, coordinated incident response, and real-time traveler information to improve safety, reliability, and mobility along one of the Bay Area’s most congested corridors. Work was completed in 2016.
Project Overview
The I-80 ICM project in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties represents one of California’s pioneering efforts in smart corridor management. Spanning from the San Francisco–Oakland Bay Bridge Toll Plaza to the Carquinez Bridge, the project implemented a suite of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) technologies—ranging from adaptive ramp metering and incident management systems to advanced communications infrastructure—to create a more responsive, connected corridor.
AMG worked closely with Caltrans and 13 local jurisdictions to design and establish a seamless communication network linking transportation management centers with field devices. This system integration enabled real-time monitoring and coordinated response to congestion and incidents, ultimately improving travel reliability and safety.
By leveraging hardware, software, and data-driven operations, the I-80 ICM project transformed a congested freeway corridor into a dynamic, multimodal transportation network—one that continues to serve as a model for regional smart corridor deployment across California.
